Have you often found yourself staring at beautiful handwriting and lettering, wondering how someone created it? Or have you ever daydreamed of becoming a calligrapher yourself? Grab a cuppa, and have a read of our chat with Linda, as we find out what it takes to be a successful calligrapher.<\/p>\n<h4>Hi Linda, I love your work! Do you enjoy your job?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">Thank you so much. I work as a graphic designer during the day and calligraphy is my side job. I sit in front of a computer all day, so when I am home I really enjoy working with my hands to create letterforms with calligraphy. I am very fortunate to have the flexibility and opportunity to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b\u200b<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">When did you first develop an interest in calligraphy?<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">My first\u00a0\u200bintroduction\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">to calligraphy was in the sixth grade [at age 11-12]\u200b. \u200bM<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">y teacher\u00a0<\/span><\/span>had the most beautiful handwriting and taught us basic Italic Hand. I was so inspired by her that I would sit at my desk after finishing my homework and practice my cursive over and over. Since then, I have continued my love of letterforms by studying graphic design and typography, then through working as a web designer and graphic designer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>How long have you been working as a calligrapher?<\/h4>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">I have always done calligraphy for friends and family, but my\u00a0<\/span><\/span>first real commission was a referral from a calligrapher friend in 2012. She\u00a0\u200bwas\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">booked\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u200bfor the job months\u200b\u00a0in advance, but couldn&#8217;t do it because she was pregnant and the baby arrived earlier than expected! So she asked me to take over. Everything went very well despite the pressure and the rush, and I gained some great experience from it too.<\/div>\n<h4>As it&#8217;s not a conventional career choice, how did you know what training to opt for? Did you have a mentor to guide you?<\/h4>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">Many practicing calligraphers are self-taught and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I knew early on that if I was to be serious about the art and craft of calligraphy, I had to learn it the right way, which is from professional calligraphers. Thankfully, there is a very active calligraphy guild in my city: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.societyforcalligraphy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Society for Calligraphy<\/a> in Los Angeles\/Southern California. I found the guild through a web search, and then found some wonderful teachers through the guild. I studied with Yukimi Annand in her studio for two years<\/span><\/span>, and\u00a0\u200bI have also\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">attended\u200b\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">workshops taught by\u00a0senior calligraphers in my guild. It&#8217;s the best thing I&#8217;ve ever done for myself as a calligrapher.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<h4>What skills do you need to be a calligrapher?<\/h4>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">Calligraphy is a life-long learning experience &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we need to be constantly learning and honing our skills in order for calligraphy to stay relevant, and to keep up with the changing times and client requests. I firmly believe that to be a good calligrapher, we need to study from the old masters. There is a wealth of free resources out there online (such as\u00a0Dr. Joe Vitolo&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/zanerian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">zanerian.com<\/a>\u00a0and also the website of<a href=\"http:\/\/iampeth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> International Associate of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting<\/a>) and of course at the local library.\u00a0Learn the rules and foundations first before breaking them skillfully and purposefully.\u200b<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">I also think it&#8217;s important to be\u00a0\u200binternet-<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">savvy and have social media skills as a calligrapher today. In the pre-Internet days, it was\u00a0possible to just work away in a studio and get business from a client list, but now there is a great surge of interest in calligraphy online<\/span><\/span>, not to mention the number of calligraphers\u00a0\u200bfrom all over the world \u200b<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">who are active on social media. There is a huge community on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lindayoshida\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lindayoshidacalligraphy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lindayoshida.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tumblr<\/a>, and of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lindayoshida\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>\u00a0[click through to view Linda&#8217;s accounts].\u00a0<\/span><\/span>By actively participating and engaging with fellow kindred spirits, I hope to share my passion and dedication for the art. Every wedding is different and\u00a0\u200bit&#8217;s always \u200b<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">a new learning experience\u200b. W<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">ith each invitation, I bring the element of hand-lettered calligraphy into the fold,\u00a0\u200bcomplementing\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">the overall style, paper, color, and making each\u00a0\u200bset of \u200b<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">invitations \u200bunique and \u200b<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">special<\/span><\/span>\u200b.\u200b\u00a0I also love\u00a0collaborating\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">with wedding planners, photographers and stylists on photo shoots. I am given the\u00a0\u200bopportunity\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">to create a\u200bn \u200b<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">invitation suite, signage, and other paper goods to add to a beautiful setting &#8211;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0not to mention the chance to have my calligraphy work professionally styled. It&#8217;s always such a wonderful treat to see my work published, whether digitally or in print.\u200b<\/div>\n<h4>Which pens, paper and tools are your favourites?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">I prefer dip pens and nibs &#8211; my favorite broad edge nibs are Brause Bandzug and Leonardt Tape, and my favorite pointed nibs are Brause 66EF, Titanium Zebra G, and a few vintage nibs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\u200bFor pointed pen practice, I love Clairefontaine or Rhodia lined pads! They are so smooth and lovely to write on. \u200bFor broad edge, I like using Arches hot press watercolor paper and Canson Mi-Teintes paper.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\u200bFor ink &#8211; \u200bwalnut ink\u00a0is my absolute favorite. I also really like\u200b\u00a0\u200bMoon Palace \u200bsumi ink, vermilion ink, PearlEx pigments, FineTec\u00a0gold\u00a0palette,\u00a0Schmincke Calligraphy Gouache, \u200band Winsor &amp; Newton Designers Gouache.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I also love the convenience of using fountain pens and inks &#8211; my\u00a0m<span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">other gave me her vintage 1960s Parker\u00a0fountain pen\u200b<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">s that I still use today, and for quick practice, I use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepencompany.live\/product\/lamy-safari-fountain-pen\/93\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lamy Safari<\/a> with a 1.5mm Italic nib. Some of my favorite brands of ink are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepencompany.live\/diamine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diamine<\/a>, J. Herbin, Noodlers, and Pilot.<\/span><\/div>\n<h4>What are your plans for the future with your work?<\/h4>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">I still consider myself a student of calligraphy &#8211; I am inspired by my teacher Yukimi Annand and I see her as one of my calligraphy role models.
